There are a number of things to consider when looking at the job that forensic investigators do.  When looking into this position it has been determined that the job description is to be able to find, collect and analyze information from crime scenes.  With the popularity of different television shows like the CSI series there are a much larger number of individuals who are going to school to be able to be a forensic investigator.  There are two different areas in which one could work as a forensic investigator.  These two areas are the crime scene or in the field and in the lab.  If you study jobs and career choices this is one of the areas in which there has been tremendous growth that can be easily seen.

This type of job is known most for its challenges and rewards.  These can be experienced in a number of different ways.  There are some steps that need to be taken in order to be able to become a forensic investigator.  The following are the common steps to help you to be able to launch your career.

Step One – There are many different names for forensic investigators.  The different names include crime scene technicians and crime scene investigators as  well as evidence technicians, criminalistics officer and crime scene analyst.  No matter what the position is called the job is still the same and is basically putting together the puzzle of a crime scene to find out what happened when the crime was being committed.  There are a number of reasons that many of these individuals have been trained as police officers as well.  However instead of working out of police stations the shift is for these individuals to be trained and working from the medical examiner’s office instead.  More and more of the people being hired have been trained in the scientific areas rather than the law enforcement areas of the job.  These employees have a number of jobs and duties that are important and that they are required to be responsible for.  One of these is that these are the people who are supposed to secure a crime scene.  Further they need to be able to measure and diagram a scene through drawings, take photographs of different areas of the scene (essentially they will want the whole scene on film), listing and collecting and then bagging anything that could be evidence, then they must be able to write a report that details how this evidence was collected as well as the significance, further they could have the duty of attending and photographing an autopsy, and eventually testifying in court.  This position is generally known for being both physically and mentally demanding and for being a position that takes its toll on an individual.  Further this position is often considered to be unpleasant in the conditions that you must work in and problem causing in many other ways.

Step Two – You will want to make sure that you have the proper education needed in order to be able to get this job.  Basically you will probably need a college degree.  Depending on where you live and the size of the law enforcement agency you will need anywhere from an Associate’s degree to a Doctorate degree in Criminal Justice.  Typically anything extra is taught by the employer in hands on training.

Step Three – In order to be able to get into this type of job you will need to make sure that you have specific personality traits.  There are so many different traits that are considered.  One is that the person needs to be very patient as it is work that requires skill and time to be able to understand the needs.  Second there are needs for the individual to be able to reason and work through different various reasoning skills.  Third the person needs to be detail oriented and be able to work both as an individual and part of a team as well.  You also would need to be able to have a strong stomach in order to be able to handle things at the autopsy and at crime scenes as they are often graphic.

Step Four – There is the opportunity to be able to get a forensic investigation degree.  This degree can set you apart from others who are looking into this job as well as help you to be able to understand and use specific skills that are needed as well.  These degrees are typically obtained from two year university as well as a four year university, technical school or even online.

There are a number of things that need to be considered when looking into the field of forensics and looking at the ability to be able to find this type of thing to be considered.  There are many reasons that having this type of job requires the right person.  One of the main reasons is the overall levels of stress that need to be considered.  These can weight on a person and if you are the wrong type of person then they might not be things that are acceptable for you and could cause you to have further problems with stress or other issues.  You need to know what is going on and figure out the different types of things that can help you to have less stress in your life.  Further there are a number of things that you should consider overall in the overall ability to be able to take care of things.  So you need to make sure before taking this type of job that you can successfully have this job and take care of yourself.  Further you will need to make sure that this job is something that is able to be understood by you and that you can have success with this type of work as well.  Further there are a number of other issues that need to be considered and thought about in order to be successful and also have your health.
